"I suffered a lot when kids would call me names like zebra and cow," said Chantelle Brown-Young (aka Winnie Harlow), who is a 22-year-old Canadian fashion model with a rare skin condition. If you wanna get inspired by a story of someone who's now having the last laugh, then get ready to hear the touchy story of Winnie Harlow.
WINNIE HARLOW EARLY LIFE
Chantelle Brown-Young- born on July 27, 1994, in Toronto, Ontario. She has two sisters and has Jamaican ancestry.
When she became four, she got the diagnosis of Vitiligo, a condition that causes the death of the cells that are responsible for the pigmentation of the skin.
She didn't notice she looked any different until the age of eight when kids would call her cow and would moo at her. She then moved to another school and girls would avoid her, with the wrong assumption they would catch her condition. From there on, her daily battle against bullying had just begun.
"It seems like the more kids get older, the more they become rude," said Harlow. In high school, all of the mean words turned into physical violence when girls started to jump her. With the constant pressure, she dropped out of high-school at about 17. She had enough of the fights the girls would start in the school corridor.
Later in a YouTube video, she also said she thought about committing suicide due to all the dehumanizing harassment it brought on.
After she left school she realized modeling was to be her path.
But even after many requests for work, modeling agencies would still neglect her, simply because of her skin. But she kept persisting and didn't give up when finally she was discovered by Tyra Banks on Instagram. From there on her life started to change.
In 2014 she was among one of the 14 finalists in the twenty-first cycle. After being eliminated two weeks before the finals, she became the official brand representative of Desigual, a Spanish clothing brand.
Today she is seen as a vitiligo spokesperson and is an example of resilience and overcoming battles. Inspiring many young women who want to take the modeling path.
Winnie has had many public appearances including Beyoncé's Lemonade, Sia's Guts over Fear music video, and others. Besides the being inAmerica's Next Top Model, shes's also been in Acces Hollywood, Prominent and Prime Time: What Would You Do.
Harlow also showed off her beauty at the London Fashion Week runway and has been the cover for Marie claire (Mexico), Hunger magazine and others. This is really a success. Besides starring in Desigual's publicity campaign, she also was featured in Diesel's campaign.
